Frequently asked questions

Is HRA exemption available under the new tax regime?

No. HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is only available if you choose the old tax regime. If you pick the new regime, your full HRA is taxable, though you get a larger standard deduction and lower slab rates instead.

What counts as salary for the HRA calculation?

Only basic salary plus dearness allowance (DA), if your employer pays DA. It does not include your full CTC, bonuses, or other allowances.

Do I need rent receipts to claim HRA exemption?

Yes. Your employer will typically ask for rent receipts (and your landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh) before factoring HRA exemption into your TDS. Keep these even if your employer doesn't ask, in case of a later query.

What if I don't pay rent but still receive HRA?

If you don't pay rent, your HRA exemption is effectively zero since the calculation depends on actual rent paid, and the full HRA received becomes taxable.
